“it’s not! this—” he points to a specific line— “is a script i wrote to check for weak passwords in a database. like, if someone uses ‘password123,’ i can see it’s vulnerable.”

you raise an eyebrow. “so you can just hack into anything?”

he smirks. “technically? yeah. but i wouldn’t. it’s illegal.”

“right, because you’re such a law-abiding citizen,” you tease.

he rolls his eyes but grins, his hands settling on your waist. “i just think it’s cool. like, understanding how systems work, breaking them down, and figuring out how to make them stronger.”

you watch his screen as he types out a few commands, explaining what each one does. you’re still not fully grasping it, but you love hearing him talk, love how passionate he gets about this stuff.

“you’re kind of a nerd,” you say, resting your head against his.

he huffs. “and yet, here you are, sitting in my lap, listening to me ramble about hacking.”

you smile. “yeah, because i like you.”

his hands squeeze your waist, and he tilts his head slightly, pressing a quick kiss to your jaw. “lucky me, then.”

you watch the lines of code scroll across the screen, feeling his warmth against you, the steady sound of his typing filling the room. you might not understand everything he’s saying, youprobably never will, it's just not your world. but you don’t mind. as long as it’s him talking, you’ll listen.

I stayed away from Link Click in order to avoid any spoiler, to the point I only discovered today that episode 1 of the Yingdu chapter was released last friday.

There is a long frame by frame rewatch already waiting for me but, at this moment, I only want to focus on this frame in the opening:

I don't know if anyone has already done it but I've cracked the code and I wish to share it with you.

Yes, that is a proper code and is fully decipherable, if you want to solve it yourself I'll share some hints on how to do it, otherwise you can just skip to the actual message section down below.

HOW TO DECIPHER THE CODE, step by step

The message is in English, lucky for us non-Chinese viewers;

2. the code uses a substitution cipher, which means every symbol corresponds to a specific letter and that letter only.

With these two clues alone I think you can already approach the message, but if you wish for more hints, here they are:

3. I could think of two different ways to decipher the code, one takes longer but it requires only one cipher; the other one is easier but there is a twist to keep in mind.

4. The longer method consists of classical substitution cipher solving approach: symbols, or set of symbols, that occurs more often in the message can be correlated with letters (E, T, ...) or words (THE, AND, ...) that occurs more often in the english language.

5. The easier way is to recognise that the symbols belong to a well known cipher: the pigpin cipher! You can google it, see the pic below

Wait what?! That is not a solution! True, and that is the twist: pigpen alone doesn't solve the code, you need one more step, another substitution cipher.

THE BLABBERING

Already many interesting things everywhere!

This message implies the existence of 5+ people: the writer of the message; the target of the message; the hired detective; the "He" mentioned in the third paragraph; the "all potential" trouble igniters (at least 2, I'd say) that should be eliminated. The blond woman seems to be the target, since the message is under her cup of tea; Liu Xiao could be the detective but I bet he is the "He"; the trouble igniters are definitely Lu Guang, Cheng Xiaoshi and the whole gang. The other two characters are way less obvious, we can only assume their identity based on which one is missing; I can only speculate that Vein could be the detective, but he could also be your basic assassin; Finally, Xia Fei could be the writer of the message, if we accept the idea that he and the woman might be somehow blood related.

Then, we have the proper content of the message: a burning forest is mentioned and we know from S2 that a forest appears in Lu Guang's memory of CXS dying (and in the opening as well). Why so much emphasys is placed on the forest?

The next sentence "determined to prevent such traged(y)" might be the most revealing: what is the tragedy? The forest on fire or something else? If it's the former, how can the fire be prevented it it has already happened? Either, they dive back in the past and change it, which we know is no-go option, or the forest on fire was a vision from the future and there is someone (Liu Xiao?) with the ability to either foresee or actually dive in the future, completing the past, present and future pattern.

And this is all coming from just one frame. One Frame.

Little Details in JJK

I've decided to put a couple of minor details I noticed and thought were neat in one place to keep track of them. They're all basically like this:

They never patched that hole up but they removed all the talismans lmao. Planning how to kill Sukuna in the room Yuji was almost executed with the finger that made that hole goes hard though.

Notes before we start.

1) This features Miguel Oduol, Yorozu, and Sukuna.

2) I will be mainly using the TCB scans for the manga because of their accessibility. 

3) Raws are from mangareader(.)to.

Miguel Oduol

We all know Miguel Oduol is from Kenya, however what you might not know is that he appears to be from the Maasai tribe specifically! I'm going to link a lot of resources about this, so keep in mind that sometimes they can be incidentally racist. (Aka a minority is tribe is discussed like an alien species.)

Cursed Technique Origins

I know a lot of people criticized Miguel's Cursed Technique (CT) for being a dance, however, it is directly related to him being Maasai. Adumu is the Maasai jumping dance practiced by warriors to show off their strength and agility. This is the dance Miguel appears to be doing when he first activates his CT against Sukuna.

If you noticed, Miguel's baldness also appears to be based it being a common hairstyle for the Maasai regardless of gender. It should also be noted that his CT, Hakuna Laana, is Swahili for No Curses. Swahili is an official language of Kenya and is spoken by the Maasai even though they have their own language (also called Maasai or Maa).

Other Details

Since the Maasai are nomadic and move around based on the weather, their dwellings reflect that lifestyle. This appears to be why Miguel is drawn outside of a hut in that one flashback—it's just how Maasai homes look.

Another thing done right was the local flora. It's super easy for creators to mistakenly apply foreign flora to the wrong region. (Take for instance, the iconic Saguaro cactus being included in settings based on Chihuahuan Desert in Texas, when this cactus exclusively grows in the Sonoran Desert, which is basically just Arizona and Baja California.)

The trees in the background are called Baobab trees and they do in fact grow in Kenya.

Why Maasai?

I think Gege picked the Maasai tribe in particular for Miguel because of their belief in curses. See from the following sources:

"While generational curses are normal within the Maasai worldview..."

"For the Maasai people, death does not traditionally hold any secrets of the afterlife. Once an individual has passed, their journey has ended. All of their possessions and any of their sins are transferred to the loved ones who survive them."

"Social control among the Maasai rests ultimately on the general belief in the power of elders to bless and to curse..."

(Please note that the word they use for curse (engooki) appears to be sometimes translated as sin.)

So when Miguel threatens to curse Geto in JJK0 if he dies?

He really fudging means it. (Could also explain why he's so particular about not dying. He doesn't believe he'll be reincarnated later, that's just it for him!)

The only thing about Miguel that didn't seem to fit with Maasai practices is the black rope. This is a stretch, but it might be based on their well-known bead work:

"Black– Symbolizes unity and solidarity. It also denotes the struggles the Maasai endure, which bring them together as a people."

Miguel certainly struggled when using that on Gojo.

Yorozu

This is mostly me complaining about what got lost in translation. Yorozu is basically a bug and I cannot wait for her weird insect shtick to get animated.

Best Bug

The first instance of her speech being bug-coded I noticed is when Yorozu yells 斬って (Kitte) 7 times total (7.5 if you count the modified 斬 (ki) at the end.

The Japanese is objectively funnier because Yorozu is screaming "CUT ME!!" over and over like cicada. The English translation gave her a poetic flair she doesn't have.

This also happens with her Domain Expansion 三重疾苦 (Shikkushikku Shikku) where 三重 (Shikkushikku) means triple and 疾苦 (Shikku) means suffering.

Additional context shamelessly stolen from the JJK wiki:

"The kanji shikku (疾苦 (しっく) ) refers to the suffering brought on by illness, affliction, or simply hardship in life. Akutami uses the pronunciation shikku as a pun of the borrowed English word "sick" (シック shikku).

Given Yorozu's excessive love for Sukuna, it is likely that the domain's name references "lovesickness", and specifically a song by Japanese VOCALOID producer PinocchioP (sung by Hatsune Miku) called "Sick Sick Sick" (シックシックシック), which is about how love can be a sickness."

(Btw シックis read as Shikku.)

My best attempt to carry forward the puns and repetition for this domain would be Triply Tristful Tribulations. (Someone please come up with something better.)

Yorozu's death is also bug-coded. Mahoraga literally swats her like a roach.

There's also something to be said about Sukuna refusing to touch her in battle and using anything but his actual body to kill her. That's kind of how most people are when it comes to killing bugs.

Not Bug Related

The thing Yorozu is lounging on in the Heian flashback is a "pillow" called a takamakura. It's a special headrest that was slept on to keep fancy hairstyles intact since they would take hours to prepare.

Since Yorozu's hair is down and she just kind of runs around pussy out while ignoring all the social rules, it speaks to her non-noble heritage. (Remember she was recruited by the Fujiwaras and is from Aizu.) She also has a bad habit of biting her fingernails when she's concentrating.

Another fun detail is that when she declares that she's going to be the one at Sukuna's side. Yorozu directly points at Uraume who is already standing there. This of course, is called back to in the epilogue where Uraume remains at Sukuna's side.

What I really like about this is that Yorozu seems to believe that only a romantic relationship will ease Sukuna's loneliness, and she's proven wrong. The platonic/familial bond with Uraume winds up being the one Sukuna chooses and it's good enough for him. I may be biased, but I appreciate when non-romantic relationships are considered just as satisfying as romantic ones.

I also have to shout out Yorozu for not seeing Uraume as competition. She still wants them around even if she marries Sukuna. It's so easy to have an obsessive character like her be irrationally jealous, but she's basically willing to adopt Uraume which is adorable. (This also goes for Hana, who in a worse manga, would see Tsumiki as competition for Megumi.)

This is just a compilation of my favorite Sukuna girlfailure moments.

Self-Depreciation

"The bough that bear most hang lowest." comes from a proverb that means "those who have the most to offer are often the least boastful, much like tree branches that bend under the weight of their fruit."

When Sukuna tells Jogo that his "head doesn't bear much" he's warning him about his lack of humility (aka not bowing enough) and calling him worthless at the same time. Pretty clever, right?

What makes this a girlfailure moment is that by this logic, Sukuna is inadvertently declaring that he's worth less than the ones he's looking down on and that his arrogance is a sign of posturing. If you pointed this out to him, he'd probably kill you, but it's kind of funny he overlooked the implication.

Manji Kick

When Yuji tries to throw hands with Sukuna after being killed, he tries to kick his gruncle in the face and misses.

This doesn't stop Yuji! Eventually he pulls off a successful Manji Kick against Mahito.

This means that even though Sukuna has dodged this move before, even though he has witnessed Yuji landing this move...

...he somehow managed to get with it in his "strongest" original form.

He Might Be Autistic

I promise I'll elaborate more on Sukuna's autism in a different post, but he's on par with Yuji in taking things at face value sometimes. Here is my favorite example.

He really took his nephew at his word and got punched in the face for it...

The Knives

When Sukuna's technique is first properly introduced, 2 knives represent it. The one on the left is a sujihiki (associated with Dismantle) while the one on the right is a burja (associated with Cleave). Uraume winds up using a burja when cutting the curses for a bath.

The thing about the sujihiki is that it's primarily used for scaling and filleting fish. You know, like for Gojo Satoru, the fish he scaled then bisected with Dismantle. The burja is used for percision cutting which is probably why Uraume uses it for the special preparation of curses. (Burjas also aren't that big, so I'd like to believe that's Sukuna's knife they're using.)

Anyways, I leave you with a panel comparison of Gojo punching Uraume like he did Hakari and Yuta. (Sukuna dodging their flying body will never not be funny.)

Gojo and Sukuna have really questionable ideas about guardianship.

Delight is loosely inspired by and based on the daughter of Cupid and Psyche in Roman mythology - Voluptas, goddess of pleasure. delight is derived from an english translation of voluptas - so while she isn't literally the goddess Voluptas, she's based around the concept of Voluptas. she can be sweet and personable, but also oblivious and selfish - her defining characteristic is that she's a party animal who prioritizes her idea of fun. as a baby this manifests as being hyper all of the time and constantly wanting attention and play time. but as an adult this manifests in being... Girls Just Wanna Have Fun coded. Pinkie Pie in a blender with Kesha, maybe a dash of Mabel Pines coded. I Just Wanna Party All The Time coded, even.

I honestly never really thought of a potential dynamic for her and the spellementary kids because I was originally planning on having her be a decade younger, so she wouldn't have really known most of them. I did eventually decide that she'd be closer in age, but she'd still be younger by a few years though - so Poof and Foop would be like 4 or 5 when she's born, and it impacts the dynamic she has with them all.

one things for certain - she's basically Poof's annoying little cousin. they're probably* not biologically related, I do think they do basically see each other as family. (*i have a crack theory about cupid and wanda being cousins but i haven't been actively incorporating it into my work so it doesn't count) she was kind of overbearing and overly nosy and in his business so she annoys him sometimes, but he does ultimately care about her - this barely changes once they're adults. at least she grew out of being blunt and uncompromising about it!

Foop would think she's annoying and invasive, and snarks about whatever nonsense she's up to. but he doesn't have to deal with her usually, so he can tolerate her to some degree.

in ANW's continuity, I think their relationship gets more adversarial. he's even more annoyed by her, and she might actively go out of her way to piss him off in passive aggressive but seemingly playful ways.

but in my specific post-canon I think she might have grown on him a bit as she gets less... annoying. but not by much if you ask him.

Buuuut since we can’t talk about our projects, let’s talk about the next best thing: Project Management! This past month, Snoozy switched from our old task-tracking system to a new system called Codecks. Imagine if you could track your project progress with a deck-building roguelike, and that’s what Codecks is! It’s a nifty little tool specifically made for Indie Game Developers, which we just happen to be.

And to clear the air: no, we are not sponsored in any way by Codecks. Though if Codecks is reading this — we’d totally love to be!

We wanted to share how this system has been working for us, so any aspiring indie devs out there can see if this system is appealing to them and potentially benefit from it!

How it works

What’s made Codecks click for us is how it blends structure with playfulness. It doesn’t just let you organize your work — it encourages you to think about it in terms of clear progress paths, visual layouts, and deck-building metaphors.

We kept falling off of our past task systems because jugging a game’s worth of art, code, design, writing, marketing, and bug-fixing while ALSO needing to come up with constantly updating organization methods is. Hard. Codecks simplifies that process!

Codecks organizes itself into Cards, Decks, and Projects. Cards are tasks (like “Animate a Hob’s death!”), Decks are chunks (animating a Hob would go in our ‘Art’ Deck, but you could split it up further into a ‘3D Animation’ deck while also having a ‘3D Modeling’ Deck), and Projects are, well, projects! (‘Hobnobbers’ is, well, our project!)

What we like

Myyy personal favorite bit of Codecks is how it handles Conversations. Conversations can be had on any card, which makes it really easy to find discussions and notes on particular topics. In the past, we’ve used Discord to talk about ideas, critiques, and problems as they’ve come up. When notes are discussed quickly, they don’t necessarily quality for opening up the whole task itself, which has made remembering clarifications like “Wait, what resolution did this sprite need to be, again?” as simple as pulling up its relevant card.

Other people on the team love the ‘Required Effort’ settings, which allow you to set an amount of effort for each card and then see how much total effort a single person has. Basically, all of us adore the fact that you can use Markdown (which I, Yukon, am currently converting this post into for the Snoozy website haha). There are just a ton of little quality of life features that really feel like this tool was made by indie devs, for indie devs, and it’s really smooth to use!

But I’m just a little guy. Just a Small Man. With Few Dollars?

Codecks is free for up to 5 users on a team! If you’re a solo developer working on a project in your spare time, it’s probably more than suitable for you.

What are you most excited for in Hobnobbers?

I’m most excited for the physics. Some of my favorite games have really robust physics simulations like Gang Beasts, Motor Town, and BeamNG.drive. I love sandbox games that have fun and unexpected environments to explore in a tactile way.

What’s something you’ve worked on in Hobnobbers recently that you’ve found particularly frustrating?

Audio Volumes and spatialization. In a 3D game, each space needs to sound different, and sometimes dialing that in just right can be a pain. Large open rooms and tiny little tunnels sound different in real life, and they will do the same in Hobnobbers, after lots of tweaking and iteration. Coming from 2D development, this literally opens up a whole new dimension of sound design.

What kinds of feelings do you hope for the Hobnobbers’ music to bring about?

I really want to mix dreamlike folktale and plastic consumerism. I am super inspired by I spy books, grimms fairytales, folk/americana music, and toy instruments for the Hobnobbers musical palette, and the music comes very naturally when the inspirations are so vivid. A lot of Hobnobbers is about simulating something tactile and physical in a digital space, and I hope to channel that into the music.

Modal Heuristic Mapping is your friend in any case where somatic data is conflicting, or simply doesn’t exist for one reason or another. Is there a way we can play your mod or is it not public yet

Wow. Always an uplifting surprise to find that.

I'll give you the short answer, and then a monologue. NBODE is not public yet, nobody but me and allegedly just one other person has played it, and it's expected to stay that way until Alpha 1.0.0 is complete on Modrinth. I'm projecting that this will take a few more months.

(Monologue)

It greatly boosts me to hear that people who are on my blog page like what they see in my mod and are interested in playing it - especially if they've only been on it for like 20 minutes at the time. Probably because I've been working on it for more than 24 months now and have been having a lot of fun playing it on a private server. I honestly can't wait for the day that it's public. Once this mod is released and gets attention on a bigger, playable scale, I will truly be the king of Beta 1.8. I think I'd like to see what let's plays happen on it a lot. Most retro Minecraft mod let's plays are unailed by the video-design scourge that clickbaitifies and controls modern Minecraft videos.

Most of the screenshots one will see from Noticeably Beta 1.8 on this blog are either development screenshots or pictures from a multiplayer server I run myself for me and practically one other person. It's called Monty Cabin, and the three worlds it uses are called Elder Hills, Mount Creep, and "Castle God". Working title on that last one. I've shared download links to Noticeably Beta 1.8 patches (it runs in ModLoader and ModLoaderMp) in the place where me and some online friends meet, but for all I know nobody but me and the one guy have ever downloaded or played it. My other friends have access, but supposedly no time to join in.

Noticeably Beta 1.8 has been taking a long time because of some "insurmountable walls" in coding difficulty and the shocking failure of modern search engines. It's terribly difficult to find any help resources on very basic things about modding Beta in ModLoaderMp, like how to make packets work or new custom mobs. Which is stupid because everyone and their mother seemed to be amazingly skilled at modding Beta back when Beta was the cutting edge vanilla version and the threads should still be around.

I also made something of a pact with myself that without adding "two specific new features" first so that me and my friend can unseal that Alpha 1.0.0 Nether Portal and go exploring them, I can't call Alpha 1.0.0 complete. Those specific features have been very hard to add. I'm not an expert at Minecraft modding by any means, and this whole time I've been punching well above my weight. I've been wondering this year if trying to get those features into the game before the completion of the first true alpha is something I should do and is worth it.

Lately, however, I'm feeling more confident. If I can figure out how to use Beta 1.8's infrastructure that was ultimately introduced in that version for a certain one of Minecraft's gameplay areas, I'll have very little work left to do before I have acceptable compromises on some of my vision for the time being, and can reasonably try to see if Modrinth approves it.

I feel I should also let people know that NBODE has some things about it that might not be satisfying for some Minecraft fans that have different tastes, even if they are Golden Age fans. In the interest of letting those people down easy, I've got some points to share. One of the first things I did was actually change Endermen a lot.

I didn't remove them, but I've been pissed off at Endermen for a long time and so I took away a lot of things that bother me about them that I think lots of people traditionally may have liked. I turned off their teleportation and removed that animation where their jaw opens and completely detaches from the back of their head for no reason.

On a potentially more agreeable note, I gave them more health than they normally get in Beta 1.8, and made it so that blocks they pick up are not removed from the world (less griefing that way) and an Enderman in the world can only place two blocks in their life each. They're also less like whatever an Enderman was before and more like fire demons, though they look the same as before. I also had to give them a discount sound effect because their usual tone is not in Beta 1.8.

Golden Age players may find this next one to be no biggie at all. It's the fact that NBODE is like Beta 1.7 in a lot of ways, the way I'll focus on here being that it's practically all about survival, gathering resources, and building. Big expeditions/journeys like you'd get in Minecraft Release 1.11 don't really come into it. Unless you want to find cool terrain. This is Beta 1.8 terrain on the other hand, so it's got famously subjectively bad landscapes and objectively over-huge oceans.

Hilariously, The Adventure Update of vanilla Minecraft in Beta 1.8 hardly had any excuse to go on "adventures" at all. It was pretty much all about extreme hills and abandoned mineshafts, which appropriately enough are terrains that partly brought me to choose this version for my mod. I also chose it because of its crazy-good mood/appearance (IMO).

After much struggling I was able to create a small structure on the surface that lets people know a Stronghold is below if they find it while playing the mod. But the point is that Beta 1.8 wasn't a very expedition-trip kind of game compared to Beta 1.7, and in Beta 1.8, and NBODE at this time, building stuff, mining, killing monsters that get in your way, and just being based is most of what you'll probably do. But a lot of people are fine with this, including me and obviously the modern-age retro gaming Minecraft Beta community.

Finally, I'll cut the "bad news" short here by finishing it with the doors. I worked very hard to change doors to make them make more sense, meaning that they are anchored on the hinges beside the door block, instead of Minecraft's usual thing where they break off if you break the floor. You can place any door against a cliff in this mod. There are already screenshots of that. However, when I added this many months ago I wasn't smart enough to make the block item activateable when right clicking on the ground, which means that some people may get confused or find it difficult to place doors. You have to stand in front of a couple of stacked blocks and place the door against their side, while "looking forward".

Since before this project even really started, I've been terrified of plagiarism of this mod. My ideas have been stolen or in some other way lifted before I could succeed before. That applies even just in Minecraft content itself. Luckily, my approach to NBODE was really smart and nuanced with the stuff I was doing. And I started documenting my development and showing that it exists pretty quickly. Because of that, I think the worst case scenario is that somebody pretends to beat me to the punch with their own bootleg Noticeably Beta 1.8, but this hypothetical person is also really stupid in addition to being a creatively-bankrupt thief and has no idea how to do all the big and little things I've picked up that make NBODE as carefully well-designed as it is, or how to do what makes it work so well.

I was also really upset in real life when I did a curious search and found out that I wasn't the first person to come out with a Beta 1.8 mod trailer or product in this decade. The mod I found is nothing like my mod, but I wanted to be the first to hit the road on Beta 1.8 bigmodding. I hate Beta 1.8.X for doing that. >:|

This is also the first answer of a Tumblr ask that I've done entirely on Linux. There's a bit of a technological disruption here, as I don't know how easy it will be to set up MCP and my mod workspace on this other computer, but maybe I'll finish the first public build before I get off my big computer. It's unknown. But I know I have to get everything backed up from my big computer and replace the operating system very soon. It's going to be okay, but it's going to be different.

Hello, do you know why salmiak is considered an allele of KIT if it's actually located on a different gene? Idk much about genetics so I'm asking you.. Would it be possible for a salmiak cat to be e.g W/W or Ws/wg or whatever on KIT, but still be salmiak if its actually a different gene? Or maybe I just misunderstood the article and its the same gene 😅 I just get confused when it says salmiak is ' downstream' of KIT?

Another genetics question I just thought of, is it possible for an allele to actually be a combination of two- so let's say hypothetical allele 1 is a deletion somewhere, and allele 2 is a virus insertion. Can there be a new allele combining both the deletion and insertion?

Yes, the salmiak mutation is outside of the coding region of KIT. But it's less like 'salmiak is located on a different gene' and more like 'salmiak isn't located on any gene'.

You can see it on this figure from the original article describing the salmiak mutation. The wide blue stripes are the actual genes: KIT on the right and something called KDR on the left. Note that there's a ~258 kb long "empty" DNA sequence between them in the wild type allele: this area probably doesn't code any proteins but it still can have important functions, for example in transcription regulation or RNA-coding.

But since this region is so close to KIT, and we know that mutations here cause similar phenotype changes as mutations in coding KIT in several animals, we can probably safely assume that this region is an essential part of the transcription of the KIT gene.

But does this mean a salmiak (wsal/wsal) cat can be for example W/ws at the same time? Yeah, actually it does. It's possible. But you have to understand one very important thing about genes: they all work like this. (Except if the mutations are in the exact same position, like coincidentally full white W and white spotting ws are.)

Let's take color restriction (TYR) for example. We have several identified alleles here: sepia, mocha, point and a couple of mutations causing albino. They all have different positions in the gene:

sepia: c.679G>T (the 679th base changes from G to T)

mocha: c.820_936delinsAATCTC (deletion of the bases between 820 and 936, insertion of AATCTC)

point: c.940G>A

albino: c.975delC or c.1204C>T

So theoretically one single chromosome could carry any combination of these mutations, even all of them at the same time. (I'm pretty sure tho that that would count as albino.)

So why do we treat them as one gene then?

So far we used the word gene as "a DNA region that codes a specific peptide", but it can be and often used in a slightly different meaning: "the unit of inheritence". KIT or TYR are clearly genes based on the first definition, but what about the second? Are they still genes by this definition?

The answer is yes, but a less unequivocal yes. In this meaning a gene is a part of the DNA that's short enough to safely ignore the possibility of a chromosomal crossover when its inheritence is considered. Crossovers can happen anywhere, they don't care for gene (as in peptide-coding region) bounderies. In terms of inheritence, there is no real difference between a single gene and two very-very-very-very thighly linked genes.

The feline chromosome B1, where KIT is located, is 208,212,889 base pair long. To get a chromosome with the salmiak and another KIT allele, a crossover must happen in the ~66 kb long region between the salmiak deletion and coding KIT. I believe that's approximately 0,000317 part of the chromosome; crossover here will happen rarely. Salmiak will behave basically allelic with the other KIT mutations.

(Since gloving is in a different position than white spotting, crossover can happen between them too. They are closer, so the probability is even lower, but it's possible.)

This starts to get very long, so i'll put a cut here, and under it i'll write about two relevant examples: the brindle allele in dogs and hotot rabbits.

Brindle

Brindle (kbr) is an allele of the K locus, it's recessive to black (KB) and dominant to wild type/yellow (ky). It's gives an intermediate phenotype between those two: the dog is black and yellow striped.

The most interesting thing about brindle is that it's incredibly hard to test for. As this page says:

At the moment there is no commercial test available testing for brindle. Instead, KB/kbr, kbr/kbr or kbr/ky will all be reported as KB/ky since elements from both alleles are present; kbr orignated from a recombination event between a KB and a ky allele. So the brindle allele essentially is a duplication of the K-Locus on one chromosome.

So seems like here happened something like what we were talking about! Once, a long time ago, there was a crossover exactly on the K gene.

Hotot and broken dutch

Rabbits have two types of white spotting: english and dutch. These are two very tightly linked genes (or maybe even both are mutations of the KIT gene), with a very low crossover rate. (This article says 1%. For not linked genes the rate is 50%.)

(Dutch has two alleles, dark dutch (dud) and white dutch (duw). Dark gives generally less, white more white.)

Hotot is a rare, desired pattern that is the combination of (usually homozygous) english spotting and (usually homozygous) white dutch spotting (EnEn duwduw). Breeding hotots is considered very difficult because of rarity of the english-dutch crossover.

If there are less white spotting alleles present, the pattern can become a broken dutch:
